According to Aryan Society News Agency, following the news of Javad Rouhi’s death, the Iran Human Rights Organization called for an independent investigation into the cause of his death by the United Nations fact-finding committee. Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, the director of this organization, also said, “Javad Rouhi’s death must be investigated as an extrajudicial killing by the fact-finding committee.”
Iranian media reported yesterday that Javad Rouhi, a political prisoner and detainee from the 2022 nationwide protests in Iran, was transferred from Nowshahr prison to Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Nowshahr early Thursday, September 9, due to a “seizure,” and suspiciously died there.
So far, officials have remained silent regarding the suspicious cause of death of this political prisoner.
A close relative of Javad Rouhi told the Iran Human Rights Organization: “On the forensic medical report, the preliminary cause of death is listed as cardiac arrest, while the IRGC officials had verbally stated the cause of death as a stroke.”
This source further stated: “Before releasing the body, Javad Rouhi’s family was made to give a pledge, and then the body was buried in Javad’s paternal village in Kelikan, Amol, in the presence of security agents. Javad had met with his parents on Wednesday and had called afterward, and he was feeling very well. However, on Thursday, before reaching the hospital, he had died, and there was plastic and cotton around his head.”
According to the public relations office of Nowshahr Prison, the medical unit’s report and explanations state: “On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, inmate Javad Rouhi went to the medical unit on his own and reported feeling unwell. After checking his vital signs and consulting the prison doctor, diclofenac and cold medicine were prescribed for Javad Rouhi.”
Despite this evidence, many of his friends and former political prisoners have raised the possibility of deliberate drug poisoning of Javad Rouhi after his death.
Javad Rouhi was sentenced to death three times by the Sari Revolutionary Court on charges of “waging war against God and spreading corruption on earth; apostasy through desecration of the Quran by burning it and insulting sacred beliefs.” This sentence was overturned following an appeal by his lawyer to the Supreme Court and referred to a parallel court.
According to reports about Javad Rouhi’s detention conditions, he was subjected to torture for forced confession. The court’s evidence for the charge of leading protests against Javad was a video showing him dancing in the street during the protests.
