Khaled Pirzadeh went on a hunger strike again 5 days after the end of his previous hunger strike last month with numerous physical problems including low blood pressure and weight loss. Dizziness and severe physical weakness have been encountered. Despite Mr. Pirzadeh’s unfavorable physical condition and previous promises, the prison authorities are still indifferent to his wishes. Khaled Pirzadeh went on a hunger strike since the morning of Monday, March 4, 2019, in protest against the lack of medical treatment and the authorities’ opposition to his parole request. The head of Ward 9 of the Greater Tehran Prison opposes his conditional release in the circumstances that he was previously included in the list of prisoners eligible for conditional amnesty by the prison authorities. On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, in an open letter, referring to the continuation of the hunger strike, this prisoner announced that he sewed his lips in protest against the non-attendance of his demands. Khaled Pirzadeh underwent surgery on his leg in August 2019. His legs and back vertebrae were seriously injured during detention and he needs more surgeries and physical therapy. He was also denied to be sent to the hospital in January 2019 despite his heart problem.
Khaled Pirzadeh was arrested by the security forces on June 5, 2018, and after some time, he was transferred to Evin prison after the interrogation process was over. In February of the same year, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the 28th branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Mohammad Moqiseh, on the charge of “community and collusion” and on the charge of “insulting the leadership” to 2 years in prison, for a total of 7 years in prison. . This verdict was finally confirmed in June 2019 by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeal of Tehran Province headed by Judge Ahmad Zargar Aina. With reference to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the severest punishment, i.e. 5 years of imprisonment, is applicable for the charge of “association and collusion” in the case of Mr. Pirzadeh.
On August 1, 2019, Mr. Pirzadeh was transferred from Evin prison to Tehran prison. It is said that he was beaten by the special guards of Evin prison during his transfer.
