Asylum requests of thousands of refugees in Cyprus from the beginning of 2022
Aryan Community News Agency – Over the past seven months, 13,000 asylum applications have been submitted in Cyprus. In proportion to the population of Cyprus, the largest number of asylum requests are registered in this country every year.
Cypriot authorities say that since January, around 13,000 refugees and migrants have applied for asylum in this country. Cyprus is a small island that is part of the territory of the European Union. Cyprus State Radio has reported that most of these people entered the country through Turkey.
According to EU statistics, Cyprus registers the highest number of asylum applications per year relative to its population.
The government of Cyprus has once again asked the European Union to cooperate with this country.
According to the information provided by the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia at the request of the country’s state radio, immigrants without right of residence constitute on average about four percent of the population of South Cyprus.
About 700,000 Greek Cypriots and 180,000 citizens of other countries live in South Cyprus with legal residence certificates. Among them, there are many British citizens.
Cyprus was divided into northern and southern parts in 1974. Its southern part is called Greek Cyprus and its northern part is called Turkish Cyprus. Only Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus as a state. But the Republic of Cyprus, which is recognized internationally, has control over the southern areas of the island.
According to the information of the Cyprus administration, most of these migrants are smuggled from Turkey to the northern region of Cyprus, which is under the control of Turkish forces. These people then enter South Cyprus through routes that are not heavily guarded.
